In 2003, Daniel Goleman, a renowned psychologist, conducted a groundbreaking experiment called Lama in the Lab. He brought senior meditation practitioners into a lab and measured their brain activity using an MRI machine to explore how deep meditative states, especially those focused on compassion, affect the brain.
These practitioners had years of experience, including months in silent retreat, making them the real deal. The findings revealed that your happiness—whether you're feeling joyful or sad—depends more on your inner state than on external circumstances.
According to the Buddhist view, mental happiness and joy are shaped more by your attitude toward events than by the events themselves.
